Nowadays, hair removal has become extremely popular — for a good reason too. Getting rid of unwanted hair is not only hygienic, but makes you feel more comfortable. What many people fail to keep in mind is the fact that removal of hair — from any region of the body -makes the area extremely sensitive. If you don’t take care of your skin properly, you may have to face issues like redness, itching, or even infections.
Even if you don’t have extremely sensitive skin, you should strive to ensure that your post- hair-removal experience is a pleasant one. These tips are applicable no matter which method you choose — be it epilators, shavers or even professional laser therapy.
After hair removal, you may be dealing with some discomfort and sensitivity. Therefore, it is important to avoid skin care products which have compounds and chemicals (such as AHAs) that are known to cause irritation. Use creams with natural ingredients (such as Aloe Vera) to soothe the skin and keep it hydrated.
Exfoliation is important both before and after hair removal. Sure, it may seem unnecessary. But it protects your skin and makes it less prone to irritation and redness. Exfoliating before hair removal removes dead skin and aligns hair follicles, which helps your epilator/shaver achieve closer and more uniform removal. Doing it after unclogs pores on the skin and inhibits ingrown hairs.
For at least 48 hours after hair removal, avoid areas that are warm and humid such as tanning salons, saunas, etc. Warm and humid conditions have been known to trigger adverse reactions. Moreover, you also run the risk of introducing bacteria into your blood stream (because the skin is in a delicate state), which could lead to infections. It is also a good idea to avoid taking a shower immediately after the procedure.
Immediately after you have used a shaver or epilator, apply hydro cortisone cream on the area. This will help soothe the skin and reduce any redness or irritation. However, do not use the cream regularly. Using it daily could not only reduce its effectiveness, but also lead to skin thinning.
When the skin is sensitive, it is best to let it breathe and rest. Therefore, whether you are going out or staying in, avoid tight-fitting clothes. Loose clothes won’t cling to the body, which will reduce irritation. Moreover, avoid exposing the area to direct sunlight. Even if it is the summer and you are tempted to wear your new bikini to the beach, wait for at least a day.
Most importantly be aware of the substances you lather on and expose to your skin, this may make or break you!
Some of us don’t really care about the products we use on our skin. While it could work for certain people, this approach may not be appropriate right after hair removal. Shavers and epilators make the skin extremely tender and it needs to be allowed time to recoup. Using abrasive products which don’t suit your skin could lead to more harm than good.
